• New guidelines for shelf prices, product labels and receipts at all retailers in South Africa have been gazetted by the National Consumer Commission.
• The guidelines were drafted after countrywide monitoring inspections found widespread non-compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, particularly among spaza shops and small retail businesses.
• The guidelines will clarify the obligations imposed on suppliers and present a general methodology for assessing the relevant sections of the CPA, but will not be binding on the NCC, National Consumer Tribunal, or Courts.
