The car brands keeping South Africa’s automotive sector alive

• VW is the undisputed king of the sector, exporting over 70,000 vehicles so far this year and representing over 30% of the industry.
• The automotive manufacturing sector in South Africa has been struggling, recording year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter decreases, with exports significantly lower than they were a year ago.
• The five major carmakers - VW, Toyota, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW - have managed to keep the sector alive, with combined exports of 203,179 passenger vehicles and bakkies so far this year.
