• The appointment comes as campaigning for the local government election is in full swing, with the election set to take place on 4 November 2026.
• The ANC's local government intervention task team, led by Ndabeni-Abrahams, aims to correct weaknesses in municipal governance and has introduced 13 reforms through a white paper.
