R2,500 per month cellphone and data allowance for government employees
- Government employees in South Africa are now entitled to a cellphone and data allowance of up to R2,500 per month.
- The new allowance is set by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, and applies to municipal managers and those directly under them, with the aim of ensuring an appropriate remuneration mix for senior management.
- Municipalities that have existing cellphone and data contracts entered into before the publishing of the notice will not be affected, and any irregular expenditure will be recovered from the senior manager concerned.
