R118 billion South African giant under fire

• The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is planning to launch a new court battle against Sasol over alleged chemical dumping in the Vaal River system, worth R118 billion.
• The allegations stem from a whistleblower complaint submitted in 2019, which led to a lengthy environmental investigation and a six-count criminal indictment against Sasol in 2022.
• The DFFE plans to reintroduce the case to the court after September 2026, following the review of new evidence, including sixteen new witness statements and expanded pollution investigations.
