Godongwana throws mayors of failing municipalities a bone
- The Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, has decided to release the remaining July 2026 equitable share allocation to municipalities, but this does not mean their issues have been corrected.
- The decision was made to protect communities from the consequences of municipal failures, with 20 of the 69 affected municipalities already receiving their full equitable share, 21 receiving partial allocations, and 28 not receiving any allocations.
- The National Treasury will follow up the release with letters to Premiers and MECs, outlining strict conditions for consideration in withholding the December 2026 instalment of the Equitable Shares if the municipalities fail to correct their weaknesses.
