End of TV Licences in South Africa

• The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) intends to remove TV licences in the country, replacing them with a new funding model expected to be implemented in the 2028 financial year.
• The SABC has been facing financial pressure, with a non-payment rate of 85% for TV licence fees in the 2025 financial year, leading to a loss of over R250 million, and will receive R234 million per year in government funding over the next three years.
• The new funding model is expected to combine public and commercial revenue sources, including advertising, sponsorships, and subscriptions, and is currently being researched and drafted into a bill to be presented to parliament in 2028.
