15 years late, and no end in sight for South Africa’s failed switch-off
- Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi says South Africa’s analogue switch-off has been suspended indefinitely.
- The country aimed to have 80% digital TV signal coverage in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which kicked off on 11 June that year, and has suffered through 16 long years of constant court and regulatory battles.
- The analogue switch-off process remains temporarily suspended, with the department requiring a reassessment of the broadcasting migration timeline.
