South Africa’s plans to move away from coal hits a huge roadblock
- South Africa failed to award gas-to-power projects in an initial round, threatening to slow the pace of the nation's transition away from coal.
- The bids received were for a combined capacity of 2,830 megawatts compared to the 2,000 megawatts sought, with bidders unable to provide gas-supply assurances to the required level.
- Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the country's responsibility now is to address the infrastructure, commercial and institutional conditions required to translate market interest into viable and deliverable projects.
