Ramaphosa deploys troops in South Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed 510 troops in KwaZulu-Natal to assist police in maintaining order amid a campaign of misinformation about refugees, with the troops set to remain on standby until the end of next month, at a cost of R34 million rand. The deployment comes as South Africans prepare for municipal elections, where recent attacks on foreigners, including in Durban, have raised concerns about communal tensions. The move aims to prevent further violence and ensure public safety.
