Turn Eskom power stations into massive heat batteries

• Eskom's existing coal fleet could be retrofitted with thermal batteries to deliver electricity at a lower rate than lithium-ion batteries.
• The Ministry of Electricity and Energy is seeking 4,600MW of battery energy storage and 5,000MW of gas-to-power generation through the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan.
• Thermal batteries, such as Carnot batteries, could store excess power and provide a more efficient solution for meeting electricity demand and process requirements.
