New tax for petrol and diesel cars proposed for South Africa

South Africa is poised to take a major step towards reducing its carbon footprint with the proposed introduction of a new tax on petrol and diesel cars. The Department of Electricity and Energy's National Energy Efficiency Strategy, currently seeking public feedback, aims to implement fuel economy standards, which could eventually lead to a feebate system where rebates for efficient vehicles are funded by levies on less efficient ones. This move is expected to incentivize the manufacture of new energy vehicles and drive the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.
