New Gautrains for R15 billion
- Alstom will manufacture eight new Gautrain units at its Ubunye facility in Nigel, in the east of Johannesburg, for R15 billion.
- The contract between Alstom and PRASA was planned to replace the ageing trains in service in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with 1,200 new electric trains over a period of 20 years.
- The SSM Consortium outlined planned improvements to the Gautrain that would be implemented over the next 15 years, including expanded public Wi-Fi for commuters, full backup power for Gautrain stations, and the launch of a new smartphone-based digital platform.
