- The small town of Molteno in the Eastern Cape, which holds the record for the lowest recorded temperature in South Africa at -20.1°C, has attracted significant wind energy investments.
- The town already hosts a wind farm with a capacity of 100MW, and a further 954.7MW of generation capacity is in the pipeline.
- The town of Molteno became part of South Africa’s anti-Apartheid struggle, and it was the site of a violent confrontation on 12 August 1985, when residents and students came face-to-face with Apartheid police.
