Goodbye Green ID Book

• The green ID book will not be recognised as a valid identity document from 31 March 2028.
• The Department of Home Affairs will stop producing green ID books on 31 March 2027, and 14.7 million citizens and permanent residents who hold only a green ID book will have a further 12 months to switch to the smart ID card.
• The machines that produce the old identity document will be permanently shut down and decommissioned at the end of March next year.
