D-day for people with rooftop solar in South Africa

• Today is the last day for Eskom Direct customers with rooftop solar to register their systems with the power utility, or they may be forced to pay the full price of a smart electricity meter.
• Eskom has created a “carrot and stick” mechanism to encourage customers to register, with Eskom paying for their smart meter if they register before the deadline, while those who register after the deadline will be forced to pay for the quote, meter, meter box, cabling, installation, and connection fees.
• OUTA has advised customers not to register their systems with the power utility, provided they have a lawful electrical certificate of compliance (CoC) for their rooftop solar installation.
