National shutdown hitting South Africa this week
- A nationwide day of mass protest against illegal immigration is set to take place on Wednesday, 30 September, with marches planned in Pretoria, Joburg, Durban, Cape Town, and other major cities.
- The protests, which were preceded by a similar event in June, have been linked to the recent murders of 12 women and are also a 'day of action' for all men in the country to march against gender-based violence (GBV).
- President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for calm and unity, urging South Africans to reject violence and intolerance, as the country faces growing tensions against foreigners and rising cases of GBV.
