300-year-old town in South Africa where dialling 10111 when you need help is useless

• The town of Phokeng, near Rustenburg in the North West, is the location of the only non-operational 10111 call centre in South Africa.
• Phokeng has long served as the traditional capital of the BaPhokeng Nation, with people living in the town for over 300 years, and its name is derived from the Sesotho word for dew, “Phoka,” meaning the town is named “Place of dew.”
• The centre does not have a Call Manager System to operate, and no personnel are placed at the centre.
